Special Feature: "KATIGBAWAN: A festival that brings the best of Catigbian"

CATIGBIAN (12 June 2009) -- Conceived in 2004 by the local leaders, Katigbawan which was coined after the Visayan words Katigbi, Tigbaw and Kabawan is a festival of culture, a celebration as an expression of unity as people with shared history. It is also considered as a tool of promotion in commerce, trade, industry and tourism.
This 5-year old festival undoubtedly attempts to down the negative image this 4th class agricultural town has,
Once tagged as haven of our left-leaning brothers, now, Catigbian has definitely carved its niche as one of Bohol’s fastest emerging economic tigers.
This year’s celebration also commemorates the 6oth Founding Anniversary of the town. Adopting the theme,”Tapok-tapok Catigbianon ngadto sa Kalambuan” the showcasing festival takes the center stage Jun 15-17, 2009.
Katigbawan showcases the best of Catigbian: agricultural products at the agri-fair, traditional games, best fighting cocks at the traditional karambola/derby, best livestock and carabaos in the carabao pageant, best cowboy in the breath-taking rodeo show, best local boxers and tennis players in the sports competition, best dancers in the dance sports and street dancing competition, the hospitality of its people in Tanda Kaliwat Catigbianon and the beauties of the Diamond Jubilee King and Queen.
Thanksgiving mass at the Immaculate Conception Parish sponsored by the Local Government Unit on June 14, 2009 at 8:30 in the morning will officially start the festivity.
Agri-fair opening and cutting of ribbon following the event would be graced by DA Sec. Arthur Yap and DA Regional Director Ricardo Oblena on Monday, June 15 at the Catigbian Livestock Auction Center (CLAC).
Carabao beauties and talents will be witnessed at 9:00 o’clock right after the parade of livestock from the CLAC to the oval.
The first ever Katigbawan Rodeo Show participated by 14 local cowboys/riders facilitated by the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office in coordination with Ubay Stock Farm, Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Animal Industry takes place at 1:00 o’clock at the Catigbian Central School Oval.
Hog catching and karambola will follow at the school oval and cockpit arena, respectively.
The staging of the first ever Katigbawan Boxing, a province wide open amateur boxing competition tagged as “Congressman Edgar M. Chatto Cup” will happen at the Catigbian Gym at 7:00 o’clock in the evening to last until the last Pacquiao punch will be traded by the last standing boxing enthusiast.
The following day, June 16 is the gathering of Catigbianon from all over tagged as “Tanda Kaliwat Catigbianon”.
This first ever tapok-tapok carries with it a noble cause of sending more scholars to college through the Municipal Scholarship Program. The whole day activity opens with a welcome program to be attended by the municipal officials and municipal scholars. Participants of will be afforded souvenir t-shirt, copy of souvenir program, two meals and snacks and series of tour to the Biggest and most modern livestock center in the Visayas, One-Town One Product (OTOP) Display Center, the Best Pamilihan in the Province of Bohol (Public Market), well organized Municipal Hall, Newly Constructed Municipal Health Center, Demonstration Farm and to the Abatan Upstream Eco-Tour site (Dagook Falls), where sumptuous native foods will be served for lunch.
Spelunking/caving to one of the explored caves will be in the afternoon (subject however to the physical capacity of the participants). With this package, the Kaliwat Catigbianon shares P1,500 in which net proceeds will go to the Scholarship Fund.
At 6pm, a welcome dinner to the participants of Kaliwat Catigbianon and a Dinner for a cause will simultaneously take place at the Catigbian Business Activity Center (CBAC).
At exactly 8:00 o’clock in the evening, the night curtains open for the Coronation of the Diamond Jubilee King and Queen, another fund raising activity for Scholarship Program and projects for the two parishes of Immaculate Conception and Sr. Sto. Niño.
Within the program, Dance Sports enthusiasts coming from the Municipality of Baclayon, Balilihan, San Isidro and the host town display their dance prowess.
The Capitol Band fills the night with music.
On June 17, the Foundation Day opens with the launching of the ARCs in the remaining barangays named “CHABBMANS”.
Catigbianons also witness the turn-over of completed ARCDP 2 Sub-projects: the Rehabilitation of Poblacion-Candumayao-Alegria-Causwagan FMR to be participated by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the distribution of BHW kits courtesy of Congressman Edgar M. Chatto.
The public will also witness the traditional games once popularly played by the children many years back like, karang either using bamboo pole or coconut shell, palosebo and tug of war.
Beats of the drums and the stomp of dancing feet gather everyone to the Catigbian Sports Oval at 1:00 pm for the annual festival street dancing competition.
For this year, streets dancers from the grandmother town of Baclayon, mother town of Balilihan and the grand daughter town of San Isidro are invited to join.
Closing ceremonies and awarding of winners is set at 5:00 o’clock in the afternoon at the oval.
Katigbawan Festival will not be officially closed unless revelers witness the shower of lights which is believed to bring more abundance and prosperity.
Over all these developments, Mayor Salinas bared, “it is not just the local government showing the world the good news, it is also the people who started to pick up our new identity: that Catigbian can indeed become the green haven for peace and development”.
All of these, Catigbain Mayor said would be nothing without the “Catigbian Performance Team” who paved the way for what this once sleepy town of Catigbian has achieved now.
