
Catigbian strengthens tanod skills for barangay policing
by Rey Anthony Chiu Tagbilaran City (4 October 2008) -- Strengthening its first line of defense now that the town has surmounted the threats of insurgents, Catigbian local officials decide to fill the vacuum when the government forces has rid the town of its rotting problem.
Then considered the hotbed of insurgents ably using the town's wide lands and forests as their haven, Catigbian has seen some of the bloodiest armed encounters, staining the place and making investors flee the place.
Mired in poverty and choked by the reign of terror, the town has sulked from progress and was left out of the bandwagon, until it regained its composure when local government leaders took the dare to finally make a dent on poverty and weave the nest for progress.
With the help of government forces who has to take double roles in showing the hard and soft arms of government, Catigbianon's slowly regained their grasp of the towns people and then finally exorcised the insurgents.
Left with a protection vacuum and scarred people who have been indoctrinized to distrust, the Salinas administration figured out, they do not have anybody else but themselves to rely on.
Now nurturing peace, with the pull-out of government forces for war-torn Mindanao, Mayor Roberto Salinas, Liga ng Mga Barangay President and the municipal local government operations officer succeeded in equipping the village watchmen and the barangay peace and order committees through a skills enhancement and training, Friday, October 3, 2008.
The training equips barangay tanods the necessary skills to do anti-crime patrols, initiate civil works and mount other pro-development projects in their localities, Lig President Teofredo Tongco bared.
MLGOO Glenda Asoy said the activity is to set up the mandated local council to let local government officials be responsible in their development programs especially in fighting crime and keeping peace and order for progress to settle in.
Mayor Salinas, in his message emphasized the crucial role of the barangay tanods with the support of barangay officials in the common effort to achieve peace and development for their respective places and the town in general.
Meanwhile, Vice Governor Julius Caesar Herrera, who graced the affair posed the dare to the village watchmen to perform their duties effectively in order to sustain the peace and order.
He stressed that the tanods form the first line of defense the country can put up, one which, when done right strengthens the town, province and the country's defense against any threat to development and progress.
To underscore his appreciation for the local tanods who put their services in line for the community and the country, Herrera also handed in kits which a watchman needs in line of his duty. The kit also includes a t-shirts.
Over this, both Salinas and Tongco expressed their appreciation from the local government leaders headed by the town's 22 barangay chairmen and the barangay peace and order committees. (PIA)
